ABOUT THE FOUNDER

LOREN LICATA, founder

📍 Aix-en-Provence, France 🇫🇷

Loren Licata is the type of writer who plans vacations around vintage bookstores & gets her best writing done on napkins. After 10 years of running her own galleries in NYC and SF, where her writing mostly graced museum walls, she jumped ship in the pandemic to pursue her writing dreams & support fellow women writers doing the same. She is currently drafting a work of autofiction in the South of France, which allows pain au chocolat to be considered research.

2023 UPDATE

📍 Brighton, UK 🇬🇧

I’m excited to announce that I’ve received a prestigious new entrepreneurial visa in the UK, so I’ll be based in Southern England for at least the coming two years (though in true form, likely somewhat nomadic still). In addition to working on my book, which has taken a decidedly slow living focus, in 2022 I began to publish articles about food, travel, & natural wine, fulfilling a life-long goal of seeing my name in print & calling vineyard tastings “work.”

FUN FACTS ABOUT ME:

🐶 My pup Maggie is my 24/7 sidekick & diligently naps at my feet while I scribble away in pubs. She has her own passport & has lived in 4 countries in her 4 years of life!

🧳 I’m an American expat and have been nomadic since April of 2020—living out of one single suitcase until I decide what to do with all my stuff in storage…

🧚‍♀️ I’ve been happily self-employed since 2014. As a kid I didn't know what I wanted to be, but I always knew I'd be my own boss, & I honestly don't think I'm employable any other way 😂

🖼 I did my undergrad at UCLA in Art History, Political Science, and French, and a curatorial Masters at the San Francisco Art Institute. While I hope to never spend 20 pages describing single paintings ever again, I can honestly say that going to art school taught me everything I know—about ways of seeing, how to think critically, and why we need art to examine the human condition

🎓 My dream job would be to acquire new PhDs for the rest of my life (while, of course, writing books & articles along the way). So far, no one has offered to pay me for this.

🧈 I am very proud of my Italian heritage and believe these nonna genetics have caused my profound love of food. While living in France I found myself penning full essays about globs of butter and juicy summer tomatoes, and I feel a perfect scoop of gelato could nearly bring me to tears

📖 Actually, I’m an HSP that feels most forms of art could bring me to tears. I’ve been to several hundred concerts in my life, on top of being an avid reader, and I wish it was still normal to read books aloud to each other as a past-time, à la Pride and Prejudice

🌊 I am a true ambivert, I am obsessed with road tripping around Europe, my happy place is the sea, I am an insane night owl, and my love language is throwing dinner parties

🖋 My writing is inspired by Joan Didion, Hemingway, MFK Fisher, Katherine May, Patti Smith, & so many others

🗞️ I actually embarked upon a journalism path somewhat accidentally. Being a travel writer was my dream for ages, but I never believed it was a feasible career. Years later while toying around with a manuscript I realized agents would want to see published work, so I began to research the process. After learning the ropes about breaking into the field with zero experience (and realizing it was WAY easier than the myths out there would have you believe…), I knew I wanted to share it with as many writers as I could 💛
